Shark fishing in the Faroe Islands

The biggest catch you can get on rod in the Faroe Islands is the

Porbeagle Shark.

It travels around the islands all year. In winther time they live

close to the shore and they are easy to catch.

We are about 20 people that fish for the Porbeagle Shark and

last winther we caught 5 sharks.

In the summer time they seem to come in for 3-4 weeks. They travel in scoals and inhabit areas were there are huge scoals of small coalies. The size of the porbagleas are from 70 to 150 kg.

There are two main methods for shark fishing, trolling and drifting.

Most of the time we are trolling for them. But recently we started

the drifting, and it is hard to tell which one is better.

But in the winther the majority is females...big females.

Notice how clumsy(carefull) the porbeagle is when it attacs.

In this video we C&R 2 porbeagles and had 9 runs, on a 4 hour fishing trip

Trolling for Porbeagle Sharks in Faroe Islands Capt. Magni Blastein and his friend Finnur had a blast at the shark spot.... 2 followers, 1 run before this one took it in.

The latest thing regarding shark fishing is catch and release. Because they are so vulnerable, and are so few in numbers.

So from the summer of 2009 all sharks will be released.
